Economy's Silver Lining

By now there’s scarcely a person in America that hasn’t at least heard of our catastrophic economic situation. Levels of concern over this debacle vary from apathy to panic. What is this country coming to and what will we do? And could it be possible to ever have a silver lining to this devastating cloud?

People are definitely pulling back; shopping less, cutting entertainment budgets, taking fewer trips, eating out less. But what does all of this really mean for us as a society and as Americans?

As we pull back, we come together. We come together as communities, neighborhoods, and families. We are beginning to spend more time with each other; eating more home-cooked and healthier meals. We are finding our entertainment close to home in each other’s company just as we used to do in those revered “good ol’ days.”

As we spend less, we begin to find real value; value in companionship, value in conversation, value in quietness, and value in time.

As we begin to count our dollars more wisely, we find increased wealth in family meals together and the added benefit of healthier eating.

This forced return to basic American principles has all of the promise of bringing us back to a place long deserted where we’ve needed to be. Perhaps it would behoove all of us to not mourn the losses of our currencies, but give thanks for the opportunity to increase our fortunes.
